:.artist statement
My artwork is strongly influenced by my research of the human visual system. While studying how the brain uses visual information to perceive depth, color, shadow, and motion, I learned that the brain is not always interested in portraying the most perfectly accurate version of our environment. Cameras have their own way of presenting reality in an unreal manner. Digital media provides new opportunities to blur the line between what is and is not real.
My experience as a photographer informs my creative efforts. The impact of a photograph depends on framing, context, setting, and point of view. The image of a photograph is further defined by the focus, contrast, and motion. To be in control of all these factors is to be in control of the reality presented in a photograph.
Technology has an incredible power to transform societies and cultures. With the aid of digital technologies, I present a fusion of the real and the virtual to question ideas of materiality and continuity. I strive to abstract reality in my artwork in order to provide a perceptual experience that is outside the human perspective. With my artwork, I hope to rediscover and represent the shapes and forms that can be found around us to encourage a deeper consideration of our surroundings and the directions technology can take us.
